May 28, dawn to after dusk, festival. This event is not a Powwow.

This year we expect Washo singers to sing Washo songs to the powers of the universe, under a Washo Blushing Moon and to a Starry Night.  The Kupabird singers/chanters from Southern California may chant their history while the Quabajai Dancers tell of their history in  dance.  We expect a Washo historian to make us better informed about the history, culture and language of the Washishu (Washo people), and we expect to learn much about the world around us.

On the 28th there will be a Sunrise Circle and everyone is encouraged to join the circle and offer good, healthy thoughts or prayers to the Great Universal Powers.  This Saturday Activity must begin before sunrise, allowing our Elders and us each time to gather and assemble.  Everyone in the circle will be smudged and will have opportunity to voice their thoughts – or think quietly.  To “include” in this activity is important.  To “exclude” is not a part of culture.

The 24th HAT CREEK  GATHERING
Once again we send out the call to gather at Hat Creek (B.C. Canada) to celebrate our unity with Mother Earth and each other and to appreciate the beauty of the meadows and woods of Hat Creek.  Twenty-four years ago we began the opposition to B.C. Hydro’s plans to develop a coal-fired thermal power plant in the area where we gather. Today they want to extract methane gas from the coal beds underlying this valley. All of this has been attempted while ignoring the existing Title and Rights to this area of both the Secwepemc and St’at’imc. This gathering is our collective statement of opposition to these plans. It’s also a time to celebrate life, community, food, music, each other.

People start trickling into the camp during Friday, bringing camping gear, food to add to the communal kitchen, crafts or produce to barter, towels for the lake, information to share, ideas for workshops over the weekend, musical instruments, costumes, and dances, songs or poems to share. The time we spend together is mostly informal and there’s always room for spontaneous happenings or focused discussions. The overall mood is one of excitement and joy in meeting together again in this special place.

This year we have a couple of requests:
We need more folks for the set-up crew. Please come either Thursday afternoon or Friday early  to be of help. If you can let us know ahead of time that you’re coming, we’d appreciate it.

Because of the extreme dryness of this already very dry ecosystem, we ask people to be super careful about fire. Please bring extra water and water containers,  rakes, shovels, mattocks,  "piss" cans, Coleman stoves and lamps.

We’d like to remind folks that making the Gathering happen is the responsibility of everyone there. Please bring at least enough food to feed yourself and more. Please volunteer to help. Leave your dogs and alcohol at home.

For more information and directions how to the gathering Contact:  Robin at michurro@ hotmail.com or Box 1599, Lillooet, B.C. V0K 1V0
