On Wednesday March 11th from 7:30-9:30pm Planet Drum Foundation and CounterPULSE’s Shaping San Francisco, will present a panel discussion and question-and-answer session that is free and open to the public. It will be held at CounterPULSE, 1310 Mission Street (near 9th Street), San Francisco.
Neil Seldman, President of the Washington, D.C.-based Institute
For Local Self-Reliance, will spearhead the first panel discussion in San
Francisco on “Local Remanufacturing Our Way out of the Recession.” Peter
Berg, Planet Drum Foundation director, and Kevin Drew, Zero
Waste Program Coordinator for the San Francisco Department of the
Environment, will join Seldman on the panel, along with local
remanufacturing entrepreneurs. Alemany Community Garden organizer, Antonio
Roman-Alcala, will facilitate the question and answer period.
“The purpose of this event is to inform the public on our need to
make products locally from local recyclables.” said Peter Berg. “Remanufacturing
provides meaningful work, closes the energy loop, and stimulates
creativity. It is a practical response to the economic slump that builds
on our physical and human resources.”
We invite anyone who is interested in jobs, the environment,
sustainability, alternatives to landfills, recycled art objects, and
public policy to attend.

How about largely
conceived projects embedded in government and local economics to already
have enormous potential and some very serious commitment? How far can they
go toward what we are introducing here as an ‘urban fractal’ a piece,

How “ecocity” can it get?

The California Delta, which is the major source of
water for Los Angeles and
the largest tidal estuary on the West Coast, is critical to the
economy and ecology of California. It is one of the most contested
landscapes in the United States, and its future is likely to be
decided through a public process. Wolff uses a brief history,
photographs, a lexicon, and a deck of narrative playing cards to
present information about this important region in ways that are
accessible to broad audiences. The book's goal is to spur discussion
about the Delta's future.

Berg works with ecological city groups in North and South America, Asia and Australia, and contributed to the 2005 UN "Green Cities" Conference of Mayors that produced The Urban Sustainability Accords, the most significant international ecological agreement since The Kyoto Protocols. He believes making cities ecologically sustainable will be at the forefront of 21st Century issues and will describe activities that can make this transformation possible.
Planet Drum Foundation initiated urban sustainability programs in Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador including extensive revegetation with native species, appropriate renewable energy, city-wide composting, creation of a "wild park", cultural celebrations, and the first community Bioregional Education Program based on Berg's innovative essay, "Learning to Partner with a Life-Place".
|
Half of the world's population now living in cities isn't merely demographically important. The greatest significance is learning to survive as an urban species, Homo sapiens urbanus.
|
For cities to be truly ecological they must be based on local ecology itself. A primary goal for city dwellers will be to restore and maintain bioregional natural systems such as watersheds, soil, and native plants and animals.
|
Cities are presently net consumers of resources and producers of garbage. They must increasingly become producers and reusers of what their residents need to survive. |
Goldhaft's WATER WEB is a twenty minute performance with words and
movement that celebrates water and describes our complex relationship to
it. It has been described as a dance/narrative, a lyric poem, and a rap
and movement eco-performance. Pultzer prizerwinning poet and eco-philospher
Gary Snyder says, "Judy Goldhaft's Water Web is a unique dance which
delights and instructs, and takes down the arbitrary boundary between art
and information..."
